Zones & Sectors
These notes were transcribed by a student of La'akea's Permaculture Design Intensive & Deep Ecology Course for November '99. The notes represent a partial outline from in-depth class discussions. If you want more complete explanations, there are several good books and Web sites for you to access.

Horses
Zone 2 - Visit 1-2 times per day (ex. grafted fruit trees, larger vegetable crops i.e. corn and squash)

Zone 3 - ex. Orchard, nut and/or fruit producing area, staple crops

Zone 4 - ex. timber, tree fuel, tree materials, forest, bamboo, ranging animals, pasture, trial seedling trees, ponds

Often it is good to have zone 5 come to your house in one area (see image below)
Sectors: Outside energy/elements coming into and flowing through the site that effect the site in both beneficial and harmful ways.

    Examples:

    • Wind - dust, fungus, pest drift, pollen, weed seeds, smells
    • People - paths, roads and boats
    • Sun - Path and angle - daily and seasonally
    • View - your view and others view of you
    • Fire
    • Sound
    • Cold Air
    • Animal Trails & Migrations
    • Soil Quality
    • Lava Flows
    • Flood Patterns
    • Lava Flows
    • People
    • Mudslides
    • Etc.

Redirect sectors if necessary - do not try to stop or eliminate them
