Students use machetes to coppice the outer branches of a Calliandra tree. In general, as coppicing increases and larger branches are removed, the tree's life expectancy decreases. This species of NFT is grown specifically because it responds well to coppicing.

Donut Mulching

Calliandra and a variety of plants are placed in a donut formation around a fruit tree in Pangia. To avoid tree rot and to encourage the roots to grow out, this organic matter is not piled around the trunk of the tree.

In the donut mulch around a tree, John Valenzuela reveals the diverse and thriving soil ecosystem, with microorganisms, a centipede, etc. "Look here everybody", he says, "here is the key to growing things. - heavily mulched-active soil!"
